How to swap a face or a character in a video

Pick the mode first, then add a base video and the image or images that should appear in it.

  1. 01

    Choose a mode

Character swap replaces a whole person, including the body and the outfit. Face swap changes only the face and keeps the body, the clothing and the movement of the original video.

  2. 02

Add the base video and your images

Upload a base video, or choose one from your library. In character swap, add one image per person to replace, up to four, in the order the people appear from left to right. In face swap, add one clear, front-facing photo.

  3. 03

    Set the output and generate

Choose a resolution, and an aspect ratio in face swap. The credit cost is calculated and shown before you press Generate, and the finished video is saved to your library.

What you can do with it

Character swap

Replace the people in a clip with characters of your own. Up to four character images are matched to the people in the video from left to right, so each one lands in the right place.

Face swap

Change only the face and leave everything else as filmed. The body, the outfit, the motion and the setting stay the same, which suits a precise and targeted change.

Write your own swap rules

In character swap, an optional text prompt lets you describe custom rules, such as which uploaded image goes with which person, by mentioning @image1, @image2 and so on.

Choose the output

Face swap offers 720p, 1080p and 4K in 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1. Character swap offers 768p and 1080p and follows the shape of your source video.

What people use video swap for

Short-form video

Rework a trend format or a template clip with a different person in the lead, without reshooting the scene.

Brand and mascot videos

Put a character you designed into several videos so an account keeps one recognisable face across its posts.

Storyboards and concept tests

Try a casting idea or a new character design inside a real scene before committing to a full production.

Creative edits

Make playful, stylised versions of a clip by dropping an illustrated or generated character into live footage.

Personal videos

Make a clip for friends or family that features the people in your own photos.

Character swap and face swap in detail

Video swap comes in two sizes. Character swap is the larger change: it replaces the whole person, so the body, the clothing and the look all follow your character images. It suits cases where you want a different person in the same scene. Face swap is the smaller change. It keeps the body, the outfit and the motion of the original and replaces only the face, which is the better fit when the rest of the clip is already right.

Each mode accepts its own file types. Face swap takes MP4 or MOV base videos of about 3 to 15 seconds and one JPG or PNG face image. Character swap takes MP4, MOV, WebM, M4V or GIF videos of about 5 to 30 seconds, with individual shots up to 15 seconds, and up to four JPG, PNG or WebP character images. The tool shows the exact limits next to each upload slot and tells you straight away if a file does not fit.

Results follow the inputs. A sharp, front-facing, evenly lit image gives the tool a clear reference, while sunglasses, heavy filters or a partly covered face make the reference harder to use. On the video side, clips where the person stays reasonably large in frame and is not constantly hidden behind objects work best. For character swap, upload the images in the same order as the people appear, from left to right.

Swapping inside an existing video keeps everything you already like about it: the camera work, the timing, the setting and the performance. Instead of generating a new scene and hoping it matches, you change who appears in the one you have. That makes it a fast way to produce variations of the same clip, such as a series with one recurring character, or several versions of a template for different audiences.

AI face swap FAQ

What is the difference between character swap and face swap?
